In which US Airways ruins a night of an otherwise awesome vacation

January 3, 2010

Our flight home from the Bahamas was cancelled and US Airways placed us on a flight leaving 2 days later. We needed to be back by 7am and our new flight wasn't due to land until 4:50pm.

We didn't find this out until 8pm on our way to Bobby Flay's restaurant, Mesa Grill. I spent 30 minutes on hold reaching US Airways only to find out I needed to contact the international department. I was told we wouldn't be put on hold while he transfered me. We were. 2.5 hours passed before we gave up trying to reach a person. Instead of a nice dinner we ended up having sandwiches from Starbucks as nothing else was open (they were pretty good!).

I went to the lobby and got on Kayak and the US Airways website. All US Airways flights were completely booked. Unable to contact US Airways I ended up paying for one way tickets on JetBlue (who lost our luggage, but otherwise I have never had a problem flying JetBlue).

I still haven't gotten in touch with anyone at US Airways. I'll give it another shot tomorrow morning.

I am glad we checked our email the night before. When we landed in the US I found a voicemail as well letting me know about the cancellation. What about those less tech savvy on vacation that didn't find the one free wifi hotspot on the island to check their email on an iPhone? The entire island was packed. If there were any rooms left they would likely be extremely expensive.

I've decided I'm willing to pay more money to fly elsewhere (preferably United or JetBlue) rather than risk flying US Airways again.

Otherwise our vacation was awesome. Expect photos tomorrow when I'm less sleepy.

Update: US Airways could not refund us for the long distance bill. Instead we got vouchers which did not equal the cost of the bill but it's better than I thought they'd be able to do. They refunded us for the flight back (the flight we didn't take). When all is said and done it ended up costing us a little over $400 extra to get back home (not including the long distance bill); really not bad. JetBlue gave us vouchers for losing our luggage; that was unexpected and welcome!
